Course Description:

The RII32020 Certificate III in Drilling Oil and Gas (Onshore) is a nationally recognised qualification designed for individuals working or seeking to advance their careers in onshore oil and gas drilling operations. This qualification provides participants with the practical skills and theoretical knowledge required to perform a range of operational tasks, including operating and maintaining drilling equipment, responding to emergencies, and managing environmental and safety protocols. The RII32020 Certificate III aims to develop participants’ competencies in operating and maintaining drilling equipment, handling drilling fluids, and ensuring workplace safety. Upon completion, participants will be able to:

  • Operate and maintain drilling and ancillary equipment used in onshore oil and gas operations.

  • Assist in running casing, tripping pipe, and maintaining mud systems.

  • Follow Work Health and Safety (WHS) protocols and respond effectively to emergencies.

  • Comply with environmental and heritage regulations and implement effective safety practices.

  • Manage drilling fluid systems and apply blowout prevention operational procedures.

Course Duration: 12 Months

The standard completion time for this course is 12 months. However, at the Academy of Career Training, we understand that employment-based training needs to accommodate your work schedule. That’s why we offer reasonable flexibility, assessed on a case-by-case basis, to support your individual needs.

Course Prerequisites and Entry Requirements

There are no formal educational prerequisites for this qualification. However, participants should have:

Current Industry Employment: Students must be currently employed in the mining, drilling, or well servicing industry, or have a confirmed offer of employment in a relevant operational role. This ensures that students have access to the necessary workplace environment for completing practical assessments and consolidating their skills.

Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital Literacy (LLND) Skills: Students must possess the language, literacy, numeracy, and digital literacy skills appropriate to the level of the qualification they are undertaking. This includes the ability to read and interpret workplace documents, complete workplace calculations, and communicate effectively with others in a mining or drilling context.

Access to Learning Materials and Communication Requirements: While the course delivery is not conducted online, students must be able to:

  • Access learning materials provided via USB.

  • Use a computer or device to open and review training resources.

  • Communicate with their trainer via email to submit assessments, receive feedback, and discuss course progress.

Physical Capability: Students must meet the physical demands associated with their industry role. This includes the ability to:

  • Work outdoors in a range of environmental conditions.

  • Perform manual handling tasks such as lifting, carrying, and moving equipment.

  • Stand for extended periods and operate machinery and tools safely.

  • Wear and correctly use personal protective equipment (PPE) as required by their workplace.

USI (Unique Student Identifier): Participants must provide a USI to enrol in accredited training in Australia.

Assessment Method 

Participants are assessed through a combination of practical demonstrations, workplace portfolios, and written assessments. These assessments ensure that participants can apply the knowledge and skills they have gained in their work environment. Assessment methods include:

  • Written Assessments: Multiple-choice and short-answer questions to evaluate theoretical knowledge.

  • Workplace Portfolio: Participants compile a portfolio of evidence documenting their skills and experience gained on-site, including photographs, logs, and supervisor testimonials.

  • Practical Demonstrations: Participants demonstrate competency in key tasks, such as assisting with drilling operations and risk control.

    Understand how to operate under an issued permit, ensuring compliance with safety regulations for high-risk activities such as confined spaces or hot work.

  • RIIENV201E – Identify and Assess Environmental and Heritage Concerns:
    Learn how to identify environmental and heritage concerns on drilling sites and implement practices that minimise the environmental impact of operations.

  • RIIERR302E – Respond to Local Emergencies and Incidents:
    Gain the skills to respond quickly and effectively to workplace emergencies, including fires, spills, and other critical incidents.

  • RIIOGD209F – Operate and Maintain Ancillary Equipment:
    Learn to operate and maintain various ancillary equipment used in oil and gas drilling, ensuring that equipment functions safely and efficiently.

  • RIIOGD302F – Assist in Running Casing:
    Understand how to assist in running casing, including handling and setting up casing operations, ensuring that they are carried out safely and in line with drilling requirements.

  • RIIOGD303F – Trip Pipe:
    Gain practical skills in tripping pipe, ensuring safe handling of drill pipe during the drilling process, and maintaining well control throughout.

  • RIIOGN302F – Operate Mud Pumps:
    Learn to operate mud pumps used in drilling operations, maintaining pressure and ensuring the effective circulation of drilling fluids.

  • RIIOGN303E – Operate, Monitor, and Maintain Mud Systems:

Certification

Upon successful completion, participants will receive a nationally recognised RII32020 Certificate III in Drilling Oil and Gas (Onshore). This certification enables participants to perform advanced operational tasks and progress in their drilling careers.

 

Please note that your certification will be issued within 30 calendar days of meeting these requirements, in accordance with the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) guidelines.
