Course Description:

The S11 Standard Mining Induction Refresher course is designed for individuals who have already completed the initial S11 Mining Induction and need to refresh their knowledge and skills to maintain compliance with industry safety standards. This refresher course ensures workers continue to meet the mandatory safety requirements for Queensland’s coal and metalliferous mining sectors. It is a key component in reinforcing critical safety knowledge and practices and must be completed within two years of the initial training.

The S11 Refresher course aims to update participants on any regulatory changes, reinforce essential safety procedures, and refresh practical skills to ensure ongoing compliance with Queensland’s mining safety legislation. By the end of the course, participants will:

• Reaffirm their understanding of mining health and safety protocols.

• Refresh their ability to identify and manage workplace hazards.

• Revisit emergency response procedures, including first aid and firefighting.

• Stay current with mining legislation and any recent changes or updates.

• Demonstrate continued competency in safe work practices for both surface and underground mining environments.

• Individuals who have previously completed the S11 Standard Mining Induction and need to refresh their qualifications to remain compliant within the five-year timeframe.

• Mining industry workers who require a refresher to maintain safety compliance in Queensland’s coal and metalliferous mines.

• Contractors, service providers, and supervisors seeking to stay up-to-date with current mining safety regulations and practices.

The refresher course is delivered in a flexible format to accommodate the needs of working professionals:

• Online Learning (Online and Practical Assessment): Participants complete the theoretical content online, followed by a workplace evidence based practical assessment to demonstrate competency.

Course Prerequisites and Entry Requirements

 

To enrol in the S11 Refresher course, participants must meet the following requirements:

​

• Completion of Initial S11 Induction: Participants must have previously completed the full S11 Mining Induction course.

• USI (Unique Student Identifier): A USI is required for enrolment in any accredited training in Australia.

Assessment Method

​

Participants will be assessed through:

​

• Written Assessments: Multiple-choice and short answer questions to confirm understanding of updated safety practices and regulations.

• A previous Statement of Attainment or USI transcript, along with permission granted to the Academy to verify prior completions.

​Course Content

​

The refresher course revisits the key competency units from the initial S11 Mining Induction, focusing on ensuring participants maintain their safety knowledge and practical skills:

​

1. RIIGOV201E – Comply with site work processes/procedures:

   • Update on any new or amended site regulations and work processes.

2. RIIRIS201E – Conduct local risk control:

   • Review of hazard identification, risk assessment, and control procedures.

3. RIIERR205D – Apply initial response first aid:

   • Refresher on first aid techniques, including updates on CPR practices.

4. RIIERR302E – Respond to local emergencies and incidents:

   • Revisiting emergency response protocols and practical firefighting techniques.

5. RIICOM201E – Communicate in the workplace:

   • Reinforcing effective communication skills, reporting procedures, and incident notifications.

6. RIIWHS201E – Work safely and follow WHS policies and procedures:

   • Refresher on Work Health and Safety (WHS) policies, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and safe work practices.

Certification

​

Upon successful completion of the S11 Mining Induction Refresher Course, participants will receive a Statement of Attainment for the following nationally recognised units of competency:

​

• RIICOM201E Communicate in the workplace

• RIIGOV201E Comply with site work processes/procedures

• RIIWHS201E Work safely and follows WHS policies and procedures

• RIIRIS201E Conduct local risk control

• RIIERR205D Apply initial response First Aid

• RIIERR302E Respond to local emergencies and incidents

 

This certification is valid for five years, after which participants will need to undertake refresher training to maintain their qualifications and ensure compliance with current safety standards.
